II-E. GEORGE MOORE SIBERT (1839 – 1913), son of George Sibert2 (John David1)

George Moore Sibert was born on 11 December 1839 in Abbeville, South Carolina. He died of heart disease on 11 October 1918, age 78, in Bordeaux, McCormick, South Carolina. [1] He is buried in the McCormick City Cemetery in McCormick. [1] He married Margaret Carson Lyon on 20 February 1866. Margaret was the daughter of Thomas J. Lyon and Margaret C. Wideman. She was born on 29 March 1849 in McCormick. She died on 11 April 1928 in rural McCormick county. Margaret is buried in the McCormick City Cemetery. [2]

George and Margaret's gravestones say: [2]

George Moore Sibert Dec. 11, 1839 Oct. 11, 1918

Margaret Lyon Sibert Mar. 29, 1849 Apr. 11, 1928.

George, age 20, along with his brother John Henry, enlisted for 12 months as a private in Company C of the Seventh South Carolina Infantry on 15 April 1861 in Abbeville. He shows up on the company's muster roll through February. [3]

According to the census, in 1870, George, aged 29, and Meg, aged 20, were living in Indian Hill, Abbeville County, with their daughter Adeline, aged three, and infant son—presumably William—who had been born in March. George was a farmer with a personal estate of 500 dollars. [4]

In 1880, Geo. M., aged 40, and Margaret, aged 31, lived in Indian Hill with their children M. Ada, aged 13; William W., aged ten; Geo. Miller, aged seven; Thos. Jeff, aged five; and Sarah Lou, aged three. George was a farmer and the the four oldest children attended school. [4]

In 1900, George M., born in December 1839, and Margaret C., born in March 1849, lived in Troy with their children George M, born in August 1871; Thomas J., born in December 1874; Virginia R., born in September 1880; Leon L., born in June 1883; Lou L., born in August 1887; and John L. born in October 1892. A cousin—Henry Morely, single and born in October 1828—also lived with them. George was a farmer; he and Margaret had been married for 34 years; Margaret had had 11 children, and nine were living. George, Jr., Leon, Lou, and John were at school; Thomas was a clerk in a grocery store. The whole family was born in South Carolina. [4]

In 1910, George M., aged 70, and Margaret, aged 61, lived with their daughter Leon L, aged 26, in Bordeaux, Abbeville County. George and Margaret had been married 44 years; Margaret had had 11 children, and nine were living; George was a survivor of the Confederate or Union Army or Navy. [4]

The 16 July 1890 Abbeville Press and Banner (p. 6) describes a suit brought by George in great detail. George sued John F. Wideman for slander and asked 10,000 dollars in damages. He alleged that on 20 December 1889 in Troy, John had stated in the presence of Captain John Lyon and Jim W. Lyon—brothers-in-law of George—that George had stolen 450 dollars from the store of Wideman and Pressley. Much of the testimony involved George's reputation, which was mixed. George deposed that he was 50 years old, had married Miss Lyon in 1866, had eight children, his oldest a daughter born in 1867. The jury found for George, but awarded him only a penny in damages.

On 21 May 1918 William L. Sibert wrote, "I went up to see Cousin Geo. M. Sibert at McCormick, S.C.; he is now 79 years old and lives about 6 miles from the place that our great-grandfather lived."
